Papillon
My work often follows two paths of investigation. One in which the stable and weighted becomes weightless and ethereal. The second creates stable forms from fragile units. Both involve a shift in perception and interaction with the piece for the effect to be achieved.
This current work was influenced by the unrest and agonizing conflicts facing humanity today. Where thousands of people are being killed because of religious, ethnic, and cultural differences.
I am fascinated with silos, both for their architectural fortitude and symbolic undercurrents.
Silos were historically built to protect and preserve, grains, water, goods, for future use. Today silos are also used as metaphors and symbols of separation, isolation and division of ideas, beliefs, and information. The silo mentality reduces trust, communication and understanding. Pitting one type of person, religion, politics, against the other. We are restricted and isolated by our own devises.
Butterflies are the masters of change and evolution. Going from the humble caterpillar to the exquisite, beautiful butterfly. And despite their arduous transformation, migration, and short lives, they endure and evolve. Butterflies are symbols of hope, change and resurrection.
Although the butterfly effect is most often associated with tragedies and catastrophes, it can also create positive change. The simple compassionate action of an individual can positively impact the masses.
Ever the eternal optimist, I believe we have the potential and promise to free ourselves from the social constructs that divide us. And find a place of commonality and grace.
